xMAP Technology
Introduction Automation provides a number of benefits to lab Automation provides a number of benefits to clinical, industrial, and research laboratories, including elimination of human errors, improvement in consistency, minimization of contamination, increased throughput, decreased costs, and reduced hands-on time. At the same time, multiplex assays offer the benefits of more data per sample, faster reaction times, reduced sample consumption, enhanced scalability, and a number of additional benefits due to elimination of repetitive steps. Integrating laboratory automation with multiplex assays provides significant efficiencies to workflow processes, especially when a large number of samples are being analyzed, or when a highly multiplexed assay is being developed. Automation can be partially or fully implemented. For example, a low test volume lab may automate only the washing steps of an assay, whereas a core facility or high volume testing lab may want to automate all assay steps, including incubation, microplate washing,

University research labs are struggling to cope with rising
University research labs are struggling to cope with rising
Some university laboratories are in 'crisis mode' as rising helium prices seriously impact their work. Ongoing rises in helium prices, most recently affected by supply shortages and by the end of helium auctions from the U.S Bureau of Land Management's helium reserve, are causing some universities to postpone experiments or decommission vital equipment. Impact of helium price rises in the U.S With scarce supply in a time of high industrial demand, helium prices are soaring, with many previous users simply being priced-out of the market. Washington University in St.Louis1 is just one institution which has been affected, being forced to close down two nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers which require helium. These instruments, which are used widely by many university chemistry departments, contain a high-field superconducting magnet which must be kept cooler than -268.95°C, and liquid helium is used to achieve this. If the magnets are not kept cool they warm

Helium shortage and escalating price, 135% Is threatening high field MRI scanners bathed in liquid helium
Helium shortage and escalating price, 135%
Is threatening high field MRI scanners bathed in liquid helium •Recent articles in Time, Forbes and New York Times highlight the shortage of helium •Helium price rises 135 % in last US auction •Helium free technology has revolutionised high field preclinical MRI scanners Despite being the second most common element in the universe helium has an annoying habit of escaping into space. If this didn’t make things challenging enough, in 1996, the US government started selling off its holding of helium at low prices as it was no longer considered a strategic material. The knock-on effect was a high level of cheap helium on the market. With reduced demand it became uneconomic for oil companies to collect helium during the extraction of natural gas; resulting in today’s significant shortage. Following the laws of supply and demand the price of helium being sold from the US resource spiked to 135% versus the previous year. This isn’t the first time this see-saw effect has been witnessed. In a New York Times article helium expert Phil Kornbush

Ceramides in obesity and diabetes
Changing lipid metabolism protects from diabetes and obesity. The adipose tissue is the body's fat storage. If we overconsume fat, the body starts to store fat in other places - like muscles and liver. This poses a severe health threat and can lead to a multitude of diseases including diabetes. But there is one class of lipids which has been of special interest in obesity and diabetes research for quite some time. Ceramides. Research groups have shown the influence of ceramide lipids on the development of early diabetes. Adjusting just a handful of selected levers of the ceramide metabolism circuits, resulted in protection from diabetes and even obesity. Key message: lipidomics links molecular lipid metabolism alterations to physiological changes.
