After this move, now more than 10, 000 carbohydrates, nucleosides and nucleotides are available at this company. The list also includes their modified analogs.
Made up of carbon (C) hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) atoms, carbohydrates can be generally divided into three types: monosaccharide, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. As one of four major classes of biomolecules in living organisms, carbohydrates play multiple roles in in nutrition supply, energy transportation as well as cell composition. “Research also showed that oligosaccharides had an effect of promoting intestinal peristalsis and improving gastrointestinal absorption similarly to water-soluble dietary fiber,” says Prof. Barron, a senior scientist from BOC Sciences. “However, too much intake of oligosaccharides would cause dyspepsia for humans.”
Nucleosides and nucleotides are important endogenous compounds closely involved with DNA and RNA synthesis, cell signaling, enzyme regulation, metabolism and other cellular processes. A nucleoside is a glycosylamine that consists of a nitrogenous base covalently attached to a sugar (ribose or deoxyribose) but without the phosphate group, while a nucleotide consists of a nitrogenous base, a sugar (ribose or deoxyribose) and one to three phosphate groups. Being the structural units of nucleic acids, nucleosides are an important participator in the conserving, replicating and transcribing of genetic information.
“Nucleoside and nucleotide are often synthesized or chemically modified to produce antiviral drugs. Their analogues are also used in the treatment of hematological malignancies and, more recently, in solid tumors,” explains Prof. Barron. “In fact, their effects are far more than this. Recent research also proves their efficacy in the inhibition of cancer cell growth, viral replication as well as other indications. ”
